Resveratrol to Extend Life

The only clinically proven way to extend life span has been calorie restriction.  Unfortunately, you need to eat 30% of what is considered “normal”.   Even if it works, being constantly cold, fatigued and hungry and having the appearance of someone starving hardly seems worth the effort.

Fortunately, it appears we can get the anti-aging benefits of calorie restriction without having to experience these unpleasant consequences.   Calorie restriction seems to work because it stabilizes (lowers) insulin and IGF-1 levels.   Insulin is usually credited with opening channels in cell walls to allow glucose to enter and be used for energy.  Less well known is that insulin promotes the storage of fat in the fat cells of the body.  As insulin levels increase, more calories are easily stored as fat.  In physically active people who are not over eating, this fat is used as a secondary energy source.  However in individuals who are overeating, especially high glycemic carbohydrates, which increase insulin production and thus fat storage, this fat accumulates.  This is the explanation for the nation of fatties we have become.

This new information indicates that if we modify our diet so that we produce less insulin, it becomes an anti-aging tool along with resolving the problems of overweight and diabetes.  This means the now popular Atkins, South Beach diets, etc. need to be low glycemic index-carb diets as well. You can eat plenty of carbohydrates in the form of vegetables, just not the starchy ones or the refined sugars or grains that turn into sugar quickly, triggering insulin release.

To help lower insulin release, add cinnamon to your diet regularly.  Supplement with chromium, alpha lipoic acid and vanadium.  Regular exercise is essential and insures that your thyroid function is optimal.  These are not only good health habits, they are anti-aging as well.

Foods that need to be avoided are sweets, potatoes, bread, pasta and rice. Your diet should consist of lots of low-glycemic vegetables, meats, cheese, fish, nuts, salad and eggs.  Your success will be measured in low triglyceride levels and low cholesterol numbers.

The other part of the anti-aging puzzle is the insulin-IGF-1 relationship.  It appears that recent attempts to promote Human Growth Hormone may have immediate benefits, which are usually short-lived, and longer-term use may even trigger worse problems, such as increased levels of insulin and sex hormones with negative consequences.   Harvard researcher, Professor David Sinclair discovered that a group of organic molecules found in red grapes (Resveratrol) are able to increase life span through their effect on a longevity protein that modulates insulin-IGF-1.  Drug companies are frantically working to develop a drug that would extend life, but there is no need to wait for an expensive drug, the natural source is already available.  Professor Sinclair believes someone who starts Resveratrol and a low glycemic diet at 50 should be able to add at least 10 healthy years to their lifespan.

The beauty of this program is that there are no known adverse side effects.  On the contrary, there are many wonderful benefits.  Resveratrol helps fight heart disease through its antioxidant activity and by increasing nitric oxide to relax blood vessels.  Professor Sinclair believes it will help treat Alzheimer’s.  Resveratrol has been shown to inhibit both the development and growth of cancer cells as well as kill existing cancer cells.

Resveratrol is particularly effective in helping to maintain normal estrogen activity thus helping control hot flashes, mood fluctuations, bone loss and other menopausal symptoms.  It appears to be useful in blocking estrogen related cancers such as breast and prostate cancer.  It has been shown to block the ability of cancer cells to metastasize to bone, particularly in pancreas, kidney and breast cancers.  Resveratrol can also be protective against skin cancer, stomach cancer, liver disease, inflammation and even pain.

Best-known sources of Resveratrol are red wine and grape juice.  White wines don’t contain Resveratrol.  The recommended dosage is 1 or 2  25 mg capsules a day.  It would take at least 20 glasses of red wine to supply this amount of the active chemicals.

If you are taking Coumadin or have a blood platelet deficiency or blood clotting problems, it would be best to discuss Resveratrol use with your doctor and have him or her monitor the situation.

It appears we can extend lifespan by regulating insulin levels and taking Resveratrol supplements every day.  In 5 or 10 years this will be considered a breakthrough.   In that time you will have already added a year or two to your life span.
